Old Introduction (comments closed - see updated intro)

INTRODUCTION

I believe people have so much to share. YOU have so much to share.

Your life experience is valuable. Whether it's being married, or getting divorced. Whether having a child, or losing someone dear to you. Whether creating a million dollar business, or failing at three startups.

If only there was a way to share that with the world so that:

1) you were well paid for it

2) you truly impact, and make a difference in, the world

3) you reach thousands or millions of people, instead of hundreds

4) you could do this from any location on the planet, creating geographical freedom, and

5) you could automate it, so you can be asleep or on vacation - and still be helping the world, while your bank account goes up!

Sound impossible? Outrageous? Have you been let down by too much 'hype' in the past? Does it offend you because you believe a person should work 40-60 hours a week, 50 weeks of the year to make a living? Could you be uncomfortable with great wealth and success, however you define it? Do you hold a belief that only technical or business-minded people can do it?

Or have you sensed that this is possible for some time now? Have you always known that you have a lot to offer; that there is a group of people wanting to learn from you. Perhaps you have intuited that what you know, even what you THINK, has value. Perhaps you have glimpsed the concept of getting paid not so much for what you do, but who you ARE.

Isn't it true that you would love nothing more than to get it out to the world, to hundreds, thousands, if not millions - if only you knew the process?

In this book I will show you the 7 steps to creating a lifestyle of contribution, impact, creativity, financial freedom, and geographical freedom.

Help the world. Live anywhere. Be creative. Be wealthy. Choose to work or not. Be free.

I'll show you the 7 step process that I used to create this lifestyle, impacting over 100,000 people and funding my travels and adventures, through an automated helping-the-world-type-business. I'll show you the same 7 step process that is now helping hundreds of people to ditch their 9 to 5 job and create the lifestyle they dream of - even if you're non-technical or time-scarce.

I'll show you how to get paid for what you know and love.

I'll show you....

how to get paid for who you are.

* * *

My question for you: If YOU were writing this introduction, what would you change? Just click here!

Thanks,

David

Yes, I want to make an impact on people's lives, so I think you intro is a great "hook". Isn't it why coaches coach - to impact other people's lives in a way that is beneficial to them? I know it's what I want.

Interesting! I have just finished reading a book about such possiblities called "The 4 Hour Work Week" by Timothy Ferriss. It has created some intense thoughts about how most lives are structured and given me great thoughts on how to achieve more with less!

This is exactly what I have experienced (paid for who I am not for what I did) and am still experiencing (belief that it is possible to create that life) so you have me interested!

If we all become coaches, who will there be left to coach? But, I am happy for your success and your service through what you have created. Making one person at a time into a more causative one, will improve society as a whole.

David - the compelling statement here is "get paid for who you are."

You don't have to be, do, have anything. Just being yourself is all you need, you're the whole package and they're buying the package.

The impact you make speaks volumes. The knowing that the client understands that you understand them is the key, and that just means showing up, showing the client what you're all about, accepting what the client is all about, seek to understand, ask the questions to get them started, be present, and co-creatively you both get it.

Let me know when the book hits the presses, I want a copy

Needs a conscious shift from "What's in it for me? (too much of this, like in 'The Secret')
and more about "How can I serve?" (Genuinely, unreservedly, unconditionally.) It is a gentle, but important shift.

What is your intent?

I have read many coaching books and watched several videos and attended conferences...to create a point of difference in your book I would look at both sides of each step. You may have a step that works for you, but is difficult to accomplish for someone else. How can they overcome some of their obstacles i.e. they do not like to write, are not gifted in public speaking, are weak at internet marketing, do not have any start-up capital, do not have strong computer skills, etc. Hopefully, they won't have all of these barriers, but they may have one or two.

Also, to be honest, the introduction sounds like a sales letter for an e-book. Yes, they do sell e-books, but to become a best selling book, content is more important. Your publisher may want you to write your own sales copy though. It is certainly a gift in itself. I hope this is helpful.

sounds great but scarey to me in the sense it is almost word for word what I wrote in a blog to Braveheart women- I focused on women who are less likely to appreciate and recognize the unique gifts they offer based on what they have learned in their lives. I believe in universal thoughts that are brought forward to be shared when needed- so this may well be one of them- GO FOR IT !!!

This has a universal appeal and yet...though unintended no doubt, it sounds like a come on, like it is too good to be true. We read a lot these days about "you too can do this (fill in the blank)." Perhaps it is just the cynic in me.

At 9:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The concept that every person has life experience to share with others is totally true. The interest in memoir writing in recent years proves the point that many people long to share their stories. Your topic certainly qualifies for Best Seller status. This blog is an effective and highly recommended way to create interest in your book long before it is completed or published. Of course, you'll have universal interest in how you plan to set your book promotion on course and take a "hand's off" approach.

At 1:05 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

this sounds great David. What is needed though is not more talk on what we "have" to do but practical steps on how to have it work. I know that I am a great coach, I only have to look at my testimonials for that, however my marketing and business skills are lacking so practical step by step knowledge would be great.
I would not like to see again that you have to set up a website, market, walk the talk etc. I know that we have to do these things but the practical steps are what is missing with anyone that actually writes the books.
Keep up the good work and looking forward to the practical.

Sounds a great book but be careful because too much hype will make some a little sceptical i.e. to good to be true. However the book does sound what most people who enter coaching want to know and if the content is strong then it should be a great success

Hi David,
I just have, at the moment, one technical issue with your introduction. The paragraph that begins with, "Or have you sensed..." the second sentence in that paragraph SHOULD read, "Have you always KNOWN...." you have "Have you always KNOW...."
It's just a typo, but make sure it's not anywhere else. Mandee

At 4:24 PM, Blogger Cynthia Salbato said...

I love the idea behind being appreciated for who we are. All of us living our authentic life adventures is how we contribute, a great concept for a book.

Yet I find this continued emphasis on wealth and working less jarring. If we're doing (and being) what we love why is it assumed we want to do less of it?

And in a current world situation where one third of the world is hungry and one third is starving, and the one third most likely to read this book is well fed, why is accumulating more wealth so emphasized? We're already wealthy.

David,
In your intro, there is a paragraph
(Or have you sensed that this is possible for some time now? Have you always know that you have a lot to offer; that there is a group of people wanting to learn from you. Perhaps you have intuited that what you know, even what you THINK, has value. Perhaps you have glimpsed the concept of getting paid not so much for what you do, but who you ARE.)

and the word "know" in the second line should be "known."

David, I have learned much from your materials or I would not be writing at all. Frankly, this intro sounds like most of the hype I have read in other online ads. this sounds more like a squeeze page than an introduction.

An introduction does not need to keep me in suspense or protect any of the secrets that will be revealed. (I already own the book) I would also include more about the reasoning, experience and motivation that brought you to write the book in the first place.

While I would most certainly like to achieve all the things you outline in this letter, as a reader who doesn't already know you, I would be looking for more substance and reason to care about your opinion.

I am sure your content will be valuable and I hope it will be received in the way it is intended. I look forward to learning more as this project moves forward.

Good luck

At 10:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's a bit too like the Joe Vitale 'this is the secret you need for success' formula writing, in my opinion. The concept sounds good but it's a little light on 'meat' to convince me to read the book - and could be just a way to get everyone's best ideas and save you the trouble! (though I'm sure not...)

A book of tried and tested tips for achieving particular personal goals would always be popular and useful, though.

So I'm a bit undecided and unconvinced about this book at the moment, but willing to learn more!

At 12:07 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think the phrase "helping the world" is as clear as it can be. I get what you're saying but many may not.

At 2:39 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If I was writing it, I would change:
- You list life experiences in the first paragraph that are all biggies but not everyone will have experienced them (none of them described me as a 30 year old) - will that put people off straight away. How about adding 'first job' or even 'leaving school to enter the working world'?
- You list five reasons starting with getting well paid - is that the most motivational of them all? My understanding is that money doesn't motivate. But making an impact does - maybe considering changing the order.
- And I would agree with anonymous who talked about overcoming obstacles that readers have used to prevent themselves taking it further. Mention things like overcoming weak sales ability, the ease of setting up income-generating internet sites, convincing yourself you are worth the money etc.
- And whilst it may crossover with the previous point, give us a taster of each of the seven steps - I may not want to read the whole bok but if I see an indication of an interesting chapter I may buy it simply for that chapter.

Hope thats helpful. I look forward to reading the next chunks.

At 4:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The intro does feel like a sales pitch (which in a sense, it is, of course . . . you want people to read on and buy the book) and will probably polarise responses. Some will think - this is just the sort of thing I'm looking for. Some will feel it's just another sales trick, sceptical and sensing it's just another book promising lots (in the "get rich in a fortnight" and "lose weight in 7 days" style) with little reality. Focus more on you, why you're writing the book and your intent. Leave the sales blurb to the back cover.

At 5:27 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lots of things have been said about this intro, especially about being 'hypey', like a sales pitch or too good to be true.
As coaches, these things 'strike' on our BS radars as something to be potentially wary of. However,in order to sell/promote a book &
appeal the part of us humans that says 'what's in it for me', there has to be some elements to evoke a range of emotions & thoughts...
especially ones that instil a 'this book has got some stuff that I can definately use' response. From my experience, David's writing is probably the most direct & honest I've read around the field of life & business coaching....and there's a lot of apparent guru's out there.
I personally would trust David to walk his talk, but this maybe because I know how good his work is. I certainly look forward to future installments!

At 5:58 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Personally, I would open with a question to capture attention immediately:

"What if you could get paid not for what you do, but for who you ARE."

Would you be interested? Let me explain...

Otherwise, love the concept...!!

At 7:41 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

David,

The intro does indeed grab the reader, as you have painted a truly great picture and I am eager to see you make this happen for the likes of myself and others through your 7 steps. We all have choices to make in life and if they can be supported and guided by sound advise, motivation and coaching then we are hopefully more likely to find our calling in life and having a go at it. I am interested in your book and hope that the 7 steps will be ones that we can use in a practical sense and be complimented by examples, learning tools and hands on opportunities to engage the learning. I am keen to see what you offer in terms point of difference compared to the multiples of other programs and books availble in the market place.

At 10:40 AM, Blogger Deb said...

Great intro and plenty of questions to get you hooked. Personally, I would swop around point 1 and 2 - although money is important its more impactful to be able to make a difference..... IMPACT is a huge thing that does elude some people so to be able to raise the awareness of the power of IMPACT is key for everyone. Q. are you someone who lights a room up as you walk in or as you walk out?!? ..... I know what one I am!:o) Can't wait to see the finished version. Deb www.wishfish.org.uk

I think it sounds really excellent. Very positive. Should appeal to a wide range of coaches and others interested in making a difference and making a living. The two do not always go hand in hand ..... there are many people making huge differences to others through who they are and poor as church mice. Great to see someone stessing it is possible to do both.
Wishing you every success.

Hi David,

An interesting hook as many have said, but for me personally its sounds like another one of those how can I shortcut my way to success, and make a lot of money (or help the author to make a lot of money).

Whilst reading some of the comments someone wrote its not about 'whats in it for me' as much as 'how can I serve'.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in earning money for being who you are, but if that is the key objective ie earning money then I think the objective is wrong and can result in stopping the coach focusing on what its all about, helping the coachee find and use the resources he has available to him .

Sorry if this is a little sceptical, but its how I feel.

I wish you lots of success and thank you for sharing this and many of your other ideas !!

Wonderful comments.

In particular I just posted a completely revised introduction - much longer to address three things:

1) add a story
2) more on why people should listen to me, and why I wrote the book
3) address concerns about 'hype' or too good to be true.

I'm torn - I want to go for it, the way Tim did with '4 hour work week', and polarize and provoke. but I also want to tone it down for people who find it too much to wrap the brain around, which I think is most. What some people are achieving is kind of on a different planet - so maybe toning it down is a good idea.

Anyway, please read Introduction 2.0 and post comments there!

Thanks again everyone,

David
